Step 1: Know your budget range before anything else
Golf simulators span an enormous price range, and the right choice depends almost entirely on what you’re trying to accomplish.
Entry-level ($500–$1,500): A Garmin R10 or similar radar launch monitor, a basic net, and a cheap mat. You’ll get real ball speed, carry distance, and launch data. Step 2: Plan your room first
Room dimensions are the single most overlooked factor in home simulator planning. Many people buy the launch monitor first and only then discover their space won’t work.
Minimum usable dimensions
For a functional golf simulator, you need:
- Width: 10 feet minimum. 12–14 feet is comfortable, especially for full driver swings where the club can extend behind you.

Step 4: Screen or net, or both?
This is the first major fork after the launch monitor decision, and it shapes every other component you buy.
Hitting net (practice-only)
A hitting net stops the ball after impact, and obviously protects your home or garage from a speeding golf ball. Your launch monitor captures the data, you see the numbers on your tablet or computer screen, and that’s it no projected course visualization. Nets start around $100 for basic options and go up to $400–$600 for quality enclosure-style nets that catch mishits safely.
Pros: Cheap. Simple. Works in tight spaces. No projector or screen required.
Cons: No immersive course simulation. Less motivating for recreational use. Can feel clinical.

Impact screen (full simulation)
An impact screen is a tensioned projection surface stretched across a frame. The ball hits the screen, stops, and the projected image shows the ball flight in the simulator. This is the full simulator experience.

Short-throw vs ultra-short-throw
A standard projector needs to sit well behind the hitting position to throw a large enough image — often 12–15 feet from the screen. That puts it in the path of your swing. Short-throw projectors produce a large image from 4–8 feet away, letting you mount them on the ceiling behind and above the hitting position where they’re safely out of the way.
Brightness (lumens)

Step 6: Choose a hitting mat
You’ll hit thousands of shots off this mat. It’s not a place to save money.
